Gariel Brownlee v. County of Los Angeles

$ 0

Our client, Gariel Brownlee, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the County of Los Angeles after being denied adequate medical care while detained at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles. What began as worsening back pain quickly escalated into a serious and life-threatening medical condition that required timely diagnosis and urgent treatment. Despite clear and observable signs that his condition was rapidly deteriorating, jail medical staff delayed appropriate care and failed to provide the necessary intervention.

As a direct result of these failures, Brownlee suffered severe and permanent injuries, including partial paralysis that significantly impacted his mobility and quality of life. The case centered on claims of deliberate indifference to serious medical needs – a recognized violation of constitutional rights under the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments and federal civil rights law (42 U.S.C. Section 1983).

This case was about far more than financial compensation. It was about accountability for a system that failed a person in its custody and ensuring that the County of Los Angeles – and correctional facilities across California – provide constitutionally adequate medical care to everyone detained within their walls. Through dedicated litigation, the responsible parties were held accountable, and Feher Law was proud to stand alongside our client in pursuing justice, dignity, and meaningful systemic change.
